WHERE WILL THE HORSE BE TRAINED?
The horse will be trained at Barry Baldwin's stables at Eagle Farm. Barry has a team of about
30-40 horses in work at his stables at any one time.
WHEN WILL MY HORSE BEGIN RACING?
If you're buying a partnership in
a yearling, it will turn two on August 1 - the horses' birthday. The earliest two-year-old runners enter races in southeast Queensland
in October. Every horse is different - some are early developers and are ready to race in the early stage of the two-year-old season.
Others take longer to come to hand. Barry always lets the horse tell him when it's ready to race.
WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
A PARTNERSHIP AND A SYNDICATE?
The rules of racing say there can be a maximum of 10 owners of a horse. These are partnerships. But
at least one of those partnerships can belong to a syndicate. A syndicate is a collection of a group of people who race
a horse under an appointed manager. Syndicates do not receive full owners' privileges (see below). Partners enjoy those privileges.
CAN
I GET OUT OF THE PARTNERSHIP?
Yes - partners own their partnership in the horse and can therefore sell that at anytime.
HOW MUCH ARE REGULAR EXPENSES?
If you have a 10 per cent partnership, you should be prepared to pay about $300 a month. This
includes training costs, basic vets fees, costs of jockeys and trackwork riders and floating fees. This is an overall figure because
costs vary when a horse is in full training/racing mode and when it is in the spelling paddock or pre-training. Costs rise for veterinary
work for serious injuries which, hopefully, your horse won't encounter.
HOW MUCH PRIZEMONEY DOES MY HORSE RACE FOR?
Saturday
races in Brisbane are generally worth between $45,000 and $50,000 (about 64 per cent for first). Midweek races in Brisbane are worth
$13,000. Races at provincial meetings (Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Ipswich) are worth between $10,000 and $12,000. They are basic
races. If your horse reaches top company, races are worth from $100,000 to $1 million and over. Prizemoney is awarded approximately
one month after a race, once drug testing is completed.
WHAT PRIVILEGES DO OWNERS GET?
Owners receive free entry to the racecourse,
including Members' Stand tickets, when their horses race. The owners' names are printed in racebooks and some form guides. Owners
enter the enclosure to watch the trainer and jockey discuss tactics before a race. If your horse wins, you're invited by the racing
club's committee for a celebratory drink.
VISITING YOUR HORSE
Barry welcomes owners who wish to look at their horses when stabled
at Eagle Farm. A quick telephone call to arrange a good time is always appreciated.
